Spam is getting weirdly intelligent.

This one looked like spam from the title, and I was about to delete it, then caught a glimpse of the contents and started reading it. Turned out to be spam after all, but it had me for a minute:

After all that was one of those stupid stock alert spam messages.

More than anything, I’m fascinated by how this stuff is generated. There’s random snippets of stuff, but it’s mostly got a specific theme. Then there’s some really off the wall stuff thrown in. And I’m wondering if they knew to target me with design patterns stuff, or if that was just random as well.

I can’t help but thinking whoever wrote the parsing engine for this stuff couldn’t be making more money doing something MUCH cooler.

    that’s so funny
I received this yesterday as well, and found it so good that for the first time ever I did not erase a spam message.
It’s a piece of modern poetry, something like what the Dada would have done (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dada)

I recently got some text copied directly from a forum post elsewhere that contained a few relevant keywords from my post.

I wouldnt have caught it if it wasnt slightly off topic

It looks like a randomized version of the editorial review of “Head First Design patterns” on http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0596007124/ericsbooks04/ref=nosim , including the mention of the flat tire 🙂

I am across your blog when I goggled the phrase “(or worse, a flat tire)” after receiving this same SPAM mail. Weird thing was I didn’t even see a link or an attachment in it.

Any ideas how to block this Stock Alert spam? I am getting like 10 f*** emails a day on this stock alert. My spam filter can’t handle it because the spam comes in small attachments with meaningful emails.
