I know I mentioned it earlier, but I thought I’d add an update that the AS3 version of Making Things Move is definitely underway. I’ve actually started updating the chapters, and have Chapter 3 pretty much done. Just need to redo a few screenshots, etc.
Chapter 2 was the biggest beast, I hope. For those of you who have the first version, Chapter 2 covers all the basics of ActionScript, timeline, movie clips, etc. So this was pretty much an entire re-write. I’m also striving to make it so all the examples are set work in the Flash 9 IDE, Flex Builder 2, or the free Flex 2 SDK. This means describing how to set up and use all three environments. It also means that there won’t be any timeline code in the book. It’s all class based, so that subject needed some more work.
I predict that Chapter 4 may be a bit of work as well, but after that, it’s mostly just converting code and explanations. At least I got through the worst part, and now it’s really getting fun.
As a side note, I’m writing all of the code for the examples using the free SDK, FlashDevelop, Ant, and my project templates. It’s working great, and I highly encourage you to try it out if you want to experiment with AS3.
Nice. I consider the first version to be one of the best books on my desk. Can’t wait to see how this one turns out.
I can’t wait to read it π
Just to clarify, don’t expect the book out for several more months. Probably early 2007. Hopefully around the time Flash 9 is released.
Absolutely. These things take time. I’m in the process of finding that out right now.
Cool Keith, take your time, good things are worth waiting for.

slacker π
grrr, just when I was about to finish reading the first one!
Still finishing the first book. Does this mean I can’t get the new book at upgrade pricing?
Flash 9 in early 2007? Can we take that as an announcement?
you’ll have to talk to your local bookstore on pricing.
and it’s definitely not an announcement. just echoing what i’ve read on various blogs, etc.
Can’t wait to see it!
Great news. Looking forward to another great book.
Keith, I hope you’ll include Grant Skinner’s collision detection class this time (translated into AS3 of course!). It’s the one thing I’d describe as an omission in the first book.
