There I was, happily typing away in MS Word and my screen goes black. Power light still on, but no hard drive action. All the usual keyboard voodoo didn’t do anything, so I power down and power back up. Power light on, fan runs for five seconds and nothing.
There’s that sinking feeling you get in your stomach when you realize something really, REALLY bad is happening.
Yes, my little Toshiba laptop died tonight. One really great thing though, is how I came to get this particular laptop. My wife had bought one a year ago last December, and I liked it so much, I went out and bought the exact same model the next week. So we have the exact same computers. I was able to undo one screw on each and swap out the hard drives. This let me 1. verify that it wasn’t a hard drive problem and that all my data was still intact, and 2. copy what I needed only my Mac Mini. Whew!
So tomorrow at lunch, I take a trip to Best Buy with Toshi. Thank God for 2-year extended warranties.
Duuude, really sorry to hear it. Doesn’t Toshiba realize how terribly this is affecting those of us eagerly anticipating Brevity? Hope it comes back to life very soon.
It is a bit of a kink in the Brevity development since I don’t have a pc to develop on at home now. On the plus side, it forced me to attempt a compile of Brevity on the Mac. There are definitely a few changes to make, but first impressions look promising. I did get a basic build of the IDE up and running.
Kp, my powerbook G4 did the same thing a while back (Apple Care fixed it immediately) … is the screen totally dark, or can you get a faint inkling of what’s on the screen?
It’s black. Beyond the power light and the five-second fan running, no visible, audible or tactile signs of life.
Per my extended service plan, after the third repair they have to give you a new machine. This is number 4. Update after lunch. 🙂
4 breakdowns in 2 years?
Remind me not to get a toshiba laptop. 🙂
My acer is running fine after about 2 years with only one hard drive crash (I think I bumped it about too much during hibernation).
The first three had to do with the power jack. This seems totally different. I love the computer overall, and my wife and one other person have the same exact model with no problems, but I agree, I’ll probably get a Sony Vaio or MacBook next time I buy.
Hola
I think it is the graphic card. I had the same scenario with my NX7000. That should be within your guarantee no?
