So I’m back to using Safari. At least for a while. I’ve tried just about every new release that has come out over the last couple years, including the betas. This one seems actually useful. But one thing that really bugs me is the behavior of the zoom button. Actually, I’d consider it a flaw of OS X as a whole – namely that every app seems to implement the zoom button differently. For many, if not most apps, it functions as a “maximize” button, much as you’d see on Windows. For others, it seems to try to figure out how big the window should be based on the content. This is what Safari does. And it bugs the crap out of me, because it’s always way smaller than I want it. I understand that “maximize” behavior may not be too workable for someone with one of those massive cinema displays, but whatever it does now sucks, IMHO.
Anyway, long useless rant and lead up to how to fix this. This isn’t even something I came up with by myself, but found on some forum somewhere. Sorry for not attributing the source, but it’s long gone, and isn’t exactly rocket science anyway.
So here it is. Drag this link to the bookmarks bar at the top of your browser. Click it and voila! Full Screen. Well, maximum size Safari for your screen anyway. You could probably hack this a bit more to set it to a specific size you want, if you’re not into the whole full screen thing.
Seems like you need to close and reopen the browser, or at least start up a new window for it to work, but after that, it’s fine. Actually, it seems like you have to close THIS page for it to work. Something about the link being on the page messes up the bookmark??? Not sure. But as soon as I re-open this page with this link on it, the bookmark fails. Odd. OK, I got it. It doesn’t work when there is a second tab open. That stinks. Anybody know a workaround?
really great work!!
it also still work for me when there is a second tab open.
thank you very much~~~hah:D
it seems there is no workaround for the tab bug (at least for the moment) : see http://blog.wearesakuzaku.com/fixing-maximize-bookmarklets-in-safari-4/
there is a system wide plugin for osX: http://www.usingmac.com/2009/3/23/full-maximize-on-mac
works best with the shortct command-option-E
The workaround is called “RightZoom” 🙂

I think full-screen maximising was suited for 1024×768 and ‘below’ resolutions, but is it really necessary on anything larger (talking specifically about web content)?
This site isn’t the best place to say this though, with it being fluid width and all.
One of the many little things Saft improve on Safari is making the zoom button behave as maximize:

Keith, these might help:

I use zooom for quick + easy window management: http://coderage-software.com/zooom/
I’m basically addicted to it.
thanks. zooom looks pretty neat. trying it out now.
tried saft. didn’t like it so much.
Zooom looks cool, I’m going to have to try it. I’ve been using SizeUp for tiling window management. Seems like the two apps might complement each other.

Use Google Chrome and get native true full screen
