Flash on Tap Workshop: From Flash to iPhone

As mentioned, I’ll be doing a workshop at the upcoming Flash on Tap conference here in Boston. The name of the workshop is “From Flash to iPhone”, which gives you a pretty good idea what we are going to cover. I’m pretty psyched for this. I’ve done some 2-3 hour workshops, but this is a FULL DAY. Lots of time to get into a lot of details and help people out individually.

We’ll be covering all the basics on how to get up and running developing apps and games for the iPhone / iPod Touch, from the viewpoint of a Flash / Flex / ActionScript developer. I know a few people have done sessions like this here and there, but I think this is the first full day workshop geared this way.

Prerequisites are:

1. A working Mac Book or Mac Book Pro. I don’t believe there’s any way to develop for iPhone on a pc, but even if there is, we’re not going to cover it.

2. You’ll need to sign up for the iPhone Developer Program beforehand. Just open up a new tab in your browser right now and sign up. It’s free. This will let you download XCode and the iPhone SDK.

3. Your Mac should have XCode and the iPhone SDK installed and set up and ready to go.

4. Ideally, you’ll be signed up as an official iPhone Developer, which costs $99. This will allow you to install and run apps on your own iPhone or iPod Touch, distribute them to others, and release them in the iTunes App Store. This isn’t absolutely necessary for the workshop, as you’ll be able to use the iPhone simulator that comes with the SDK for most things. But you’ll be missing out a bit when we do stuff like accelerometer support. In addition to the $99, you have to wait to get approved. For me, this took something like 2 hours, but I’ve heard others waiting days or weeks for approval. So drop the cash now and get that in progress.

Even if, for some stupid reason, you aren’t going to the full Flash on Tap conference, you can still sign up for the workshop alone. In fact, if you are interested, email me at kp at bit-101 dot com and I’ll get you a discount code. Sign up at the site: http://www.flashontap.com

  1. Oh, very cool. Already signed up for this and purchasing the $99 developer license this evening. Excited for Flash on Tap overall, but this workshop was an instant sign-up, the minute I heard about it in your free online preso a few months back.

  3. I’ll be attending and am quite looking forward to it, since my boss has been hounding me for iPhone games since he got the first distribution of the SDK, and Objective-C has so far confused the pants off of me.

I hope you have extra time to cover the joys of code signing…

I really hope that this somehow becomes accessible to people who couldn’t make it . I’ve been dabbling with iphone stuff since the start of the year, purely because of your enthusiasm and great information. Are you planning on doing the talk elsewhere (i.e. the UK hopefully)?

    Thanks!

  9. Just registered for your workshop, Mr. Peters. Let the balls, fall. 😉
