After numerous conversations this past week at FiTC, I feel I need to reiterate a few things about who I work for and what I do…
1. I do NOT work for Red5. In fact, NOBODY works for Red5. Red5 is not a company. Red5 is a server. It is an open source project. It is free. Various people work ON it. A lot of people work WITH it. Nobody works FOR it. Nobody gets paid for working on Red5 and nobody pays to use Red5. Adobe is not going to buy out Red5. Neither is Microsoft. They can’t buy it. There is nothing to buy. There would be nobody to pay.
2. Infrared5 is a consulting company. I work for Infrared5. We have clients who pay us money to build rich internet applications. Many of the projects we work on happen to use Red5 on the back end. Most of the people who work ON Red5 also happen to work FOR Infrared5 as well, either as employees or as contractors. So yes, it’s confusing as hell, but they really are separate entities. In the course of my daily work, I really don’t do anything with Red5 itself, other than occasionally connecting to a server that happens to be running Red5, calling a method or publishing a stream.
3. Red5Server.com is yet another for-profit company. It is a joint venture between Infrared5 and Influxis, offering hosted Red5 instances. Influxis has been a great provider of FMS hosting for years, allowing you to use FMS without worrying about installing and maintaining your own server. Now you can do the same thing with Red5. They supply the hardware, the server, the bandwidth and storage, service, maintenance, management. You upload your files and access Red5 from there, and pay a monthly fee for them taking care of all the details.
Any questions?
To bad you’re such a dissapointment to meet in real life
Shattered your illusions, did I? Sorry bout that.
Wait so let me get this straight… You are a real person I can meet? And you work somewhere? Huh, I had thot you were some kind of spectral energy ball or something. Hmmmmm
That’s what happens when you pull the curtain aside.
infrared5 takes too long to say. ESPECIALLY when you’re drunk. you can’t make me say it.
but in real life, you’re cuddly. bob’s crazy.
So wait… you work for Red5?
Just kidding 🙂
so, I’m a disapointment, but a cuddly disappointment.
what’s that?
Keith, was that a reference to the 1980s advertisement “This is your Brain on Drugs. Any questions”? LOL, anyway, great post. It’s clear and concise; hopefully that clears it all up for people.
Oh, and you are Soooooo not a disappointment.
don’t you twist my words, keith. you’re no disappointment.
Glad to hear everything is going well at red5!
we are not that stupid we all know that Red5 is a server .. and we all know that you are working for its owners !!
