Art Gallery Opening

Last night my gallery show opened at Axiom Art in Jamaica Plain (Boston).

I did a small interactive piece reminiscent of Gravity Pods, but more real time interactive. A particle emitter emits a steady stream of particles. You control them by adding “suns” and “anti-suns”, and they draw trails in random colors. It was the only interactive piece in the show, so people seemed to have a lot of fun with it. One guy and his girlfriend were playing with it for at least a half hour. Then I looked over and there’s a crowd around him and he’s giving them a little training session on it. That was funny.

A cool surprise was that Stephen Wolfram (creator of Mathematica and Mathworld and author of A New Kind of Science) showed up and even played with my installation. I talked to him briefly. He was surprised to learn that it was Flash and didn’t seem to be a big fan of ActionScript. He said I could have created the same thing in Mathematica in 15 minutes and didn’t see the point of doing it in Flash. Haha. Oh well. Everyone has their agenda.

Benoit Mandelbrot was also invited, but as of the time I left, he had not arrived. Now THAT would have been cool.

Some more photos here. In the beginning it was pretty sparse, but about the time I left, there were quite a lot of people in there.

Anyway, the show is open through April 27, gallery hours Wednesday, Thursday 6-9pm – Saturday, 2-5pm. There are lots of other cool math/art things there as well.

Congrats Kieth. I wish I could have been there.

  2. Wow. Stephen Wolfram, huh. I guess now that he finally released “A New Kind of Science” he isn’t nocturnal anymore. Cool.

Congrats (and wish I could’ve gone) as well. The Wolfram comment is classic. 🙂

Kudos on the show. I think its hilarious that Stephen Wolfram said that to you.
