I’m doing a project where I need to convert a ton of code from Flash 5 to Flash MX 2004, AS 2.0. The code needs to retain as much of the original structure as possible. (It’s for a very popular Flash 5 book that is being re-released). After a lot of messing around, I finally came up with a guideline for myself that at least codifies the process. I thought this might be useful to others who have to do anything similar.

I’ve blogged about it a few times, as have others, but let’s try to get organized about it. Here, so far as I know, is what is supported and not:

Also, knot configurations are now saved between re-drawings, which should make it a breeze to save them in shared objects or text files using SWF Studio…eventually. https://www.bit-101.com/celticknots/ Read more...And I take the last step away from the Flash AS EditorI’ve been a PrimalScript addict for a few months now, after being hooked by Chafic. I create all my classes in it, but still wound up doing a lot of setup work in the Flash IDE for creating instances, laying out stuff, etc. Occasionally I’d throw in an #include to an external .as file, but that never felt exactly right. At the O’Reilly table at FlashForward, I picked up the little preview booklet of ActionScript 2.0 Essentials. I’d read the excerpts before on line, but had another look at them. Now I’ve converted a few of my projects to implement an application class. The class does all the set up and layout and instantiation. You start it with a public static main() function, where you can pass in some parameters. My projects now look something like this: Read more...Celtic Knots in FlashWhen I used to do pen and ink illustration, Celtic Knots were a lot of fun to draw by hand. Something sparked my interest in them recently and I realized that the system for creating them is really very logical and mathematical. So, of course I had to do it in Flash! Here’s the preliminary result: https://www.bit-101.com/celticknots/ Click on any rope intersection to cycle through the crossover types. You can make some pretty cool patterns. All done with the drawing api by the way. Read more...FF2K4 SF Picture GalleryFinally had a chance to go through the pictures, rotate, rename, color correct and thumbnail the lot. So, for those of you who are interested in embarrassing pictures of yourself, myself, or other selves, check it out… https://www.bit-101.com/sanfran/ Read more...I, too, am back from Flash ForwardSeems like the blog entry of the day. Off to FlashForwardIn 24 hours or so, I’ll be heading to the airport and hence to San Francisco for FlashForward 2004. It’ll be my first full conference. I went to 2003 NYC, but only for the Film Festival, where -ahem- I won the Experimental Category. v2Component clipParameters revelationTo follow up on yesterday’s post about v2 components not working in Flash 6 player, here’s what I found:
