As you may know, I’m a bit of a PrimalScript evangelist. Of course saying which editor is “best” is about as useful as saying which programming language, computer platform/OS, political party or religion is “best”. But personally, I’ve grown very comfortable with PrimalScript after more than a year of using 3.1. Version 4.0 just rocks the house, and I’ve seen some of the planned features for version 4.1 (an ActionScript targeted release) and they just have my mouth watering.
Anyway, if you tried it and liked it, but have gone with another editor just because the other one was free, maybe now is your chance to jump. On December 31, 2005, for 24 hours (12:00 – 11:59) you can download PrimalScript 4.0 for only $99. That’s a $70 savings.
If you haven’t tried PrimalScript yet, download the trial and check it out for the next week. Here’s the page for the standard version info and trial download: http://sapien.com/ProductsandServices/PrimalScript4Standard/tabid/211/Default.aspx
And here’s the link to purchase: http://www.scriptingoutpost.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=PSS40-DL-01
Of course, the price now says $169, but if you go there on December 31, it will show the discount price.
Any discount for the pro version?
Doesn’t look like it. But, from the comparative features chart on the site, the two features that Pro has over Basic that would be useful for ActionScript development are the integrated FTP browser and the PrimalDiff file comparing.
Although these are nice to have integrated, there are certainly plenty of other programs that do both features. Honestly, 99 bucks is a great bargain for what you get in the Basic version.
Keith, what improvements in version 4.0 benefit you in ActionScript development?
Hey Robert. I guess what you are asking is, is it worth the upgrade from 3.1? Good question. The big one is code folding. For some people that’s a make or break point of an editor. Others couldn’t care less about it. I find it pretty handy myself.
Other than that, hmmm… I’ve been using 4.0 since an early beta, so I kind of forget what 3.1 was like. I can’t think of anything else major that I use on a daily basis that wasn’t in 3.1. I can say for sure that there were a lot of stability improvements and bug fixes.
As I’ve said before, 4.1 will be out some time in the spring I believe, and will be an ActionScript targetted release. Some great features going into that, and I THINK it will be a free upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1. Not sure if the new features will go into Pro or Standard though.
All the AS specific features will go into Standard. There will be some advanced non-AS specific features that go only into the Professional and Enterprise.
We promised early on that this will be a free upgrade.
Please also note that you can always upgrade from Standard to Pro just for the difference in price.
Good point Keith. Do you have any recommendations for file differencing utilities? I’ve only recently had the need for one and it seems there are oodles to choose from.
